Maps
Without a map, no-one in your world knows where they are...
Maps are what brings everything in your world together. Maps can tell you
where you might have divisions between one
culture and another or one country and another, based on geographic
boundaries. They also give you information about where countries and
cultures are likely to connect, interact, share technologies and ideas, or
possibly collide and come into conflict. A well crafted map will give your
world shape and substance.
What You Need To Do:
- Examine maps of the medieval world on the web sites listed below.
- Think about what types of geographic features you will need to
include in the map of your world.
- Draw out the continents, oceans, mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, and
other basic geographic features. You can add in towns and villages later,
after you have worked out some more details about the people and cultures
that will inhabit your world.
- As you draw out your map you will need to think through some basic
problems of geography and world building. Where are there sheltered coves
that might serve as ports for ships? Which rivers are navigable (usable
for travel by boat)? Are the
mountains passable, and if so where are the entrances and exits to the
passes? What is the basic climate (temperature and weather) of each
region?
- Many old maps are colored and decorated with pictures. Have fun
decorating and illustrating your world map!
