1) Winnie has never met a Celestial before meeting Lee. What does she think of them before she gets to know Lee? How are her opinions different from other people she meets in Cisco?

2) What are some of the cultural habits that the white Americans in Cisco dislike but might have learned from the Chinese immigrants? (taking baths, eating vegetables)

3) Why does Mr. Hennessy tell Winnie that the men in charge of building the railroad want to know who is watching their work?

4) What is at stake over the race to build the railroad track? (free land based on miles of track = $$$)

5) The Chinese workers buy all their own food. Why does Winnie feel compelled to sneak food to Lee? Why would Mr. Crocker try to starve the Chinese workers into coming back to work?

6) When the entrance to the tunnel becomes blocked, why do the white workers refuse help from the Chinese workers in getting it unblocked and the white and Chinese men out? Does this make sense?
